THE MOST NEGLECTED ASPECT OF PEYRONIES DISEASE (AND OF PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT)
|
Peyronies Disease (PD) has been described as a wound
healing disorder, an inflammatory condition and
autoimmune disease. Unfortunately, the definitive cause
is unknown, but it would be accurate to also describe our
disease as an elastin disorder. This is the most neglected
aspect of PD as illustrated by the fact that I was able to
locate only one research paper (from 1994) that was
dedicated to the specific topic of PD and elastin
antibodies . As far as I can tell, no research has ever
been conducted to investigate treatment approaches for
correcting anti-elastin antibody abnormalities of PD. This
illustrates the general lack of interest by the scientific
community in our disease. From my research and reader
feedback, I can almost guarantee that if you go your
physician for diagnosis or treatment of PD, the word
elastin will not come up.
Elastin is a protein that coils and recoils like a spring
within the elastic fibers of connective tissue and accounts
for the stretching of structures such as the skin, blood
vessels, heart, intestines and penis. Elastin functions in
connective tissue together with collagen. Whereas
collagen provides rigidity to connective tissue, elastic
provides elasticity. Elastin can be stretched up to 150%
of its length and helps determine the stretched length and
width of the penis. The synthesis of elastin occurs
throughout a lifetime. Disruption of elastin or a decrease
in elastin content will result in penile deformity, erectile
dysfunction and shortening and narrowing of the penis.
PD plaque consists primarily of collagen and this plaque
has an abnormally low content of elastin.
Basically, under current theory, it is presumed that men
who overdue it during sex suffer an injury to the penis.
Through a complex chemical process, healing of the
injured area takes place. In the later stages of healing,
penile connective tissue is remodeled by specific
collagen and other substances. Over production of
collagen causes the formation of plaque or scar tissue.
This abnormal, dense packing of collagen results in the
disruption or displacement of elastin.
