PROSTATE CANCER AND PEYRONIES DISEASE
The Link Your Doctor May Never Tell You About
                    Because He May Not Know
A Must Read For Every Man
The prostate gland is a small, walnut size structure
that is part of the male reproductive system.  It is
wrapped around the urethra, the tube that carries
the urine out of the body.  The prostate gland is
troublesome because as men age, the gland
enlarges and interferes with urine flow.  More
seriously, it is the site of the most common male
non skin malignancy.  According to the American
Cancer Society, 218,690 men will be diagnosed with
prostate cancer annually.  One out of every 6 men
will eventually develop this cancer.  Of those
diagnosed, the most common treatment will be a
Radical Prostatectomy (RP) which is the surgical
removal of the prostate with its capsule, seminal
vesicles, ducts and sometimes pelvic lymph
nodes.  According to the latest figures provided by
the Centers for Disease Control, 168,000 RPs are
performed annually in the United States. Some of
these RPs are Robotically Assisted Radical
Prostatectomies (RPP) and others are known as
Open Radical Prostatectomies (ORP) .  While these
surgical interventions may or may not be the most
effective treatment for prostate cancer, the medical
establishment, in my opinion, has failed in their
obligation to inform patients about the potential
adverse side effects of this surgery.  The data and
articles I have reviewed are disturbing in revealing
the physicians' lack of knowledge and their
subsequent failure to provide patients with the
necessary information to give informed consent for
this surgical procedure.

Informed consent has been a vital part of patients'
rights since the 1970s as illustrated in the landmark
case of Canterbury v. Spence.  Essentially, since
then, a physician has been obligated to
communicate all material information to the
decision at hand, including all risks with the
procedure(s) that may sway a patient's decision.
One can only speculate as to how many men since
the 1970s have made a decision to have a RP
without being informed by their physicians of the
possible risks associated with a RP.  Based on the
current evidence discussed in this edition, a RP,
whether robotically assisted or open, is strongly
associated with the development of Peyronies
Disease (PD) and significant loss of penile length
and girth.

For those of you who maybe newly diagnosed with
PD or may have reached this site because of some
link with a prostate cancer site and are not familiar
with PD, it  is a medical disorder in which fibrous
plaque develops around the corpus cavernosum of
the penis resulting in bending of the erect penis,
often accompanies by excruciating pain. In all but
the mildest cases, PD also results in an hourglass
deformity of varying degree and loss of penile
length and girth.  It is speculated that the cause of
PD is an injury or series of micro traumas to the
penis primarily though sexual activity.
