PEYRONIES NEWS IN BRIEF
Dr. Gabe Mirkin
I always enjoyed reading this Doctor’s articles, listening to him on the radio and
reading his newsletter. In his article, Treatment for Peyronie’s Disease (8882) Dr.
Mirkin states that injections with the blood pressure medicine Verapamil can cure
this condition. It’s hard to believe a physician can give out such misinformation. No
one with any credibility alleges that Verapamil treatment will cure Peyronies. I don’t
think that I will ever read another article by Dr. Mirkin again without questioning its
veracity.
How Many Men Have Peyronies
It seems obvious to me that Peyronies is a vastly underreported disease. When I
see numbers like 1% or 2% I have to shake my head in amazement at how low this is.
In a 03/30/2008, article from the People’s Pharmacy, a reader asks a question about
his bent penis. The physician replies that Peyronies affects about 8% of men over
age 50. This sounds like the correct number and I wonder where this physician
came up with 8%.
The Muscle of Love
There is a website written by a Dr. William Wong about exercises he recommends to
increase the size and thickness of the penis. The exercises sound pretty time
consuming, but those of us with Peyronies are probably willing to try anything. What
is even more interesting is his cautionary note concerning penile surgery. He
states that post-operatively a man will have to spend months with weights attached
to his penis to prevent scar tissue formation. Note: This is a commercial site with
plenty of advertising.
Another Silly Suggestion
There is a Website by a Dr. Michael A Werner of Purchase, N.Y. The doctor has a
generally good discussion of Peyronies and available treatment options. He
mentions that Vitamin E oil may be a suggested treatment. I wrote him and asked if
he could provide me with a link showing that Vitamin E or Vitamin E oil were
effective, but no response was ever received. The simple reason is that there is no
evidence that any Vitamin E product is effective for Peyronies.
Malpractice
There is a law firm in Australia by the name of Julian Johnson that specializes in
medical malpractice claims. In looking over their website, I noticed that one of their
specialty areas is botched Peyronies surgery. I have contacted them requesting
further information about their cases and am awaiting their response.
Considering Surgery?
You probably can count on one hand the number of urologists who have any
expertise in the area of Peyronies. Dr. Laurence Levine of Chicago 312-563-5000 is
one of the most prominent physicians in this field. Patients literally fly in from all
over the world to see him. When I was there the man in the seat next to mine, filling
out a Peyronies Questionnaire, had flown in from England. In certain circumstances,
Dr. Levine may agree to a phone consultation (for a fee). If you are considering
surgery, I strongly suggest that you get a pre-operation opinion from Dr. Levine. If
you do, please mention my web site. Note that I do not receive any remuneration for
mentioning his practice. Prior to the phone consultation, it would be helpful if you
could supply Dr. Levine with a copy of your penile ultrasound. Not the paper
summary, but the actual ultrasound. You can probably get an ultrasound from any
urologist. The only downside to consulting with Dr. Levine is that he is very busy
and he and his staff can be rushed.
Something You Can Do
One of our major problems is that Peyronies is a virtually invisible disease. It is
vastly underreported and never mentioned in the press. The New York Times has a
health section with 3,000 medical conditions in their database. A search for
Peyronies shows up nothing. The same can be said of the BBC health website.
There are always articles in the papers and Internet about prostate cancer. Did you
know that prostate cancer treatment can increase your chances of getting
Peyronies? I have created a sample post that you can submit wherever you see a
prostate cancer story. Any publicity we get would be helpful. Feel free to modify as
required.
I enjoyed your article of MM/DD/YYYY concerning prostate cancer. I would like to
mention another risk factor related to prostate cancer treatment, Peyronies Disease.
With this condition a man develops scar tissue in his penis, making sex difficult or
impossible and is often associated with excruciating pain.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Department of Urology, men who undergo a
Radical Prostatectomy experience a 1,000-fold greater risk of developing Peyronies as
compared to the general population.
I guess because Peyronies is such an embarrassing condition, it is a vastly under
reported, hidden epidemic. Unfortunately, there is no satisfactory treatment for this
condition.
I have read your publication for many years and have never seen an article mentioning
Peyronies. You would be performing a public service by writing about this condition.
Hopefully, some publicity will bring it out of the closet and make men aware of this
additional risk of prostate cancer surgery. Two informational sites (No Ads) about this
condition are the www.curepeyronies.net and http://thebentnail.blogspot.com/
NIH Funding Still Available
The National Institutes of Health has an Office of Rare Diseases. Peyronies is one of
the medical conditions under their jurisdiction and they are offering research
funding. If there is any medical researcher, institution, nonprofit, etc. who wants to
file for a grant, please contact me to see if we can put together a proposal.
Website Volunteer Needed
As you can see, this is not a professionally designed website. Is there anyone out
there with website design experience who can spend some time to make this a
more professional looking site?
