Men with PD typically complain of a decrease in penile
dimensions, both length and circumference. Patients who
increase in the incidence of PD. (I have written extensively
about this topic and if you want to see past articles, just
type “prostate” in the search box.)  Just to cite one study.
Urology 2001, studied 31 men who underwent a RP. Twenty-
two had penile shrinkage.
It is likely that his same elastic
disorder is responsible for their condition. My opinion.

Journal of Urology, July 1994, Increased Levels of
Anit-Elastin Antibodies in Patients with Peyronies Disease

research performed at the Department of Urology, Loma
Linda Veterans Administration Hospital, Lama Linda,
California

First definitions:

  • Tropoelastin - a water soluble molecule. Multiple
Tropoelastin molecules bind together to form elastin
which is very prevalent in the body

  • A-elastin - is denatured elastin. It is modified to be
    chemically inactive.

Researchers compared levels of serum antibodies to
Tropoelastin and A-elastin in men with PD as compared with
controls.  Serum antibodies to both substances were
approximately 35% higher in the PD men as compared to the
control group.

Men with PD have a marked increase in elastin destruction.
These findings suggest a high turnover rate of elastin.
Microscopic review of PD plaque shows dense packing of
collagen consistent with the displacement of elastin. The
destruction of elastin and the increase in collagen packing in
PD plaque appears similar to mechanism seen in
Scleraderma and other connective tissue diseases.

Two additional facts need to be mentioned.

  • Collagen creams that are advertised to restore skin are a
waste of money for us as they will do anything but
    empty our wallets

  • As I am sure you are aware, Xiaflex is currently being
tested as a treatment for PD. This substance, if
successful, will address the collagen issue and help
straighten the penis.  As far as I can tell it will not
    address the elastin abnormality.

In writing this article, I wish there was a more upbeat
conclusion. This is not the case. The purpose of this article
was to highlight a neglected aspect of our disease and the
current state of research.

SIZE MATTERS
Elastin in normal
loose network of
fibers extending in
all directions; this
permits stretch and
contraction of
penile tissue in
nearly any
dimension.
Elastin in
Peyroine's
Disease: Note that
the fibers are
reduced in
number and the
fibers that are
present are very
short and
abnormal.  This
tissue would not
stretch normally.
